Goddess
03:47
|
|||
Well I'll tell you a story if you will lend an ear
It's not exactly blurry, but it's not exactly clear
How the mesmerizing Goddess got stuck in the mud once again.
A peasant with a shovel and a satchel full of flour
Was working in the fields, toiling hour after hour
When up comes the Goddess, here to buy him some relief.
But the peasant cant afford to lay his shovel down
They're lined up at his door cause he owes money around town
But here comes the Goddess, here to buy him some relief.
So the peasant can't refuse those things he's offered in the night
And when the morning comes, he'll have to crawl back down into his life
When the morning came the peasant woke up in a different bed
With a Goddess lyin' beside him, and an aching in his head
He couldn't quite recall the night or the things that he had done
But when he looked upon the girl it all came flooding back at once
Now he cannot go back to the life that he has built
It's time for him to move on and leave behind the guilt
The people he has borrowed from, his neighbors and his friends
He leaves them hangin' out to dry, picks up the broken ends
and goes away.
So the peasant can't refuse those things he's offered in the night
And when the morning comes, he'll have to crawl back down into his life

Mississippi Jam
04:06
|
|||
Down in Mississippi where the sun don't shine
There was a guitar player puttin' in his time
Along came a fella with a silver horn
and they started jammin' til the early morn
Twenty minutes later they had a drum
They had a solid beat from a local bum
They got a yell from a window to keep it down,
The bum yelled back "Well this ain't your town!!"
It was an old,
old fashioned
Mississippi Jam
As the sun went down, a neighbor walked by
He'd been workin' all day, was comin' home to get high
He ran upstairs to grab his bass, brought the weed back down to help keep the pace
They lit up a joint right there on the street
Another tenant came home the the Mariner Suite
He walked inside, but not for long
He was on the fire escape with a saxophone
It was an old,
old fashioned
Mississippi Jam
Well as the night went by, the music kept goin'
They kept on playin' til the early morn'
At quarter til eight they cracked a bottle of gin
And up walked a man with a violin
Now they had a total of a six-piece band
They we're hittin' the streets like a newspaper stand
From bluegrass to funk and a bit of the blues
They had bucket of soul and a bottle of juice
It was an old,
old fashioned
Mississippi Jam

The Alligator Song
03:54
|
|||
Down in Alabama by the Florida border
There was an alligator problem among the older population
They're runnin' rampant all around town
And if your grandfather's missin' and your mama's in the kitchen
And you ask her where he went and she tell's ya he went fishin'
You'd better take another look around
Well I know that you won't find a trace
I saw him walkin' down by the lake
I tried to stop him when he headed my way
That stubborn bastard wouldn't stop
Over by the river there was something in the water
And it waddles on the land and it ate the farmer's daughter
So the farmer grabbed a gun and went down to the pond
But the pond and the river are connected by a sliver
and the farmer didn't know it and he's not that great a swimmer
and before he knew it he was gone
Well I know that you won't find a trace
I saw him walkin' down by the lake
I tried to stop him when he headed my way
That stubborn bastard wouldn't stop
(SCAT)
Well I know that you won't find a trace
I saw him walkin' down by the lake
I tried to stop him when he headed my way
That stubborn bastard wouldn't stop
Well there's a lonely woman waitin' by a window in the kitchen
And she's watchin' and she's listenin' for a whistle while she's wishin'
That her husband is alright, he's been gone half the night,
and that's not like him at all
So she ventures outside to see what she sees
And she feels her body get tense and uneasy
She looks around and sees the alligator eyes

Caught On a Line
04:37
|
|||
Twinkle, twinkle, little star
Don't you ever wonder just who you are?
Where you come from, where you're goin'
Just how long you're gonna be on this course
If you wanted, could you get up and leave,
Move on to some other galaxy
and shine like somethin' they've never seen
Or are you stuck there, caught on a line,
Goin' in circles till the end of time,
I see it all around me, people caught in the grind,
What to do, what to do.
So I play in the subway stations,
I play my songs for the metro patrons,
I been around, I know all the right places,
I like the acoustics underground.
I look for smiles, seen about a million,
From doctors and lawyers, nurses and children,
I ain't made for politics, and I ain't made for killin'
So I'll just stick to my songs.
And every now it crosses my mind,
All these people of all different kinds,
Each has their story, we've all got our trials,
But everybody must look at the sky sometimes.
I spend my days in the back of a van
Writin' songs with my own two hands
And a pen that I borrowed from a check cashing stand
About a month or two back
I keep a little whiskey and a bottle of wine
I keep em with me almost all of the time
Just in case I find myself in a bind,
I crack a bottle, look to the sky and think
Twinkle, twinkle, little star
Don't you ever wonder just who you are?
Where you come from, where you're goin'
Just how long you're gonna be on this course
If you wanted, could you get up and leave,
Move on to some other galaxy
and shine like somethin' they've never seen.

Painted Shoes
03:39
|
|||
I painted my shoes black for work
Went and got me a button down white shirt
With a collar for fourteen dollars and change.
I even got me a bus pass for the week
So I can make it to each and every
Shift they let me work to earn my keep.
An hour ago I was unemployed
But here I am like a brand new toy;
Shaved and showered, I combed my hair,
I'm even wearin' fresh underwear
And if you look closely you can see it in my eye
That I'm here for a while and I don't just try
But I pull it together when it matters the most
And no matter the weather I'll be ready to go like that
And even though I know I saw you first
It doesn't matter, you've seen me at my worst
And it ain't the same as you might think.
I had a feelin' I'd see you down the line
And here we are standin' eye to eye,
Face to face, cheek to cheek.
Well whaddaya wanna do darlin'?
Whaddaya wanna do right now?
Well if you wanna tear me down, I'll put up a fight.
I may have nothin' but the air in my lungs,
But I'll be damned if I don't use it all to say this right.
Why can't you look me in the eye?
Sometimes I wonder why I even try
But then you give me that look and I just melt
It's just the hand that I've been dealt
When I see you I cannot help it I
Fall as if I never fell.
I fall as if i never fell.

If I never see you
05:41
|
|||
Well there's a rusty boat floatin' by an old wooden dock
Well I guess you'd call it floatin', but it looks like it got stuck
And in the hull there's a hammer, along with the debris
Of the years gone by, maybe two or three or maybe more.
And as the sun goes down, he finds himself awake
Thinkin' bout the things that he can't go back and change
Cause it's all gone and done with, and written in the book,
And I don't know who keeps it I never bothered to look
I figure it's all taken care of, and for granted it may seem,
But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it and enjoy the time between
Now and then.
And if I never see you, I wish you all the best my friend.
Well he's got a silver dollar on a pedestal at home
With a light shone upon it like a spotlight on a throne.
It reminds him what he's there for as he's countin' down the days
Well he never meant to be here, but he can't seem to pull away anymore.
So his boat's just rusting way back in the woods
Of some land that he'd acquired back when the real estate was good
He'd been there once or twice, built a dock on a pond,
He'd lost track of a hammer, never found where it'd gone,
But I've been there.
And if I never see you, that doesn't mean that I don't care.
Well I ran into a friend that I hadn't seen in years
I saw him at the bar and we had a couple beers,
He told me he'd been married, had an ex-wife and two kids
And his attention was divided and he really missed the gigs
He looked at me a smiled, there's somethin' to be said
For livin' in a van that you can park by the liquor shed
Every now and then.
And if I never see you, I wish you all the best my friend.
He said "If I never see you, I wish you all the best my friend."

Silver Lake
02:43
|
|||
There was a man who wore thick rimmed glasses
He did it for the look, not for the sight
He didn't need them but he thought they looked fantastic
So he wore them all day and all night
He's the same kinda fella
That wears a funky hat
Rides a bike with a bumper sticker and
Always shops from the vintage rack
He's up to date on the weather
He's got a couple of Apps for that
He's all connected on the Twittergram
So he can tell you where he's at
He's got a job that tolerates his fashion
He's got a car that runs on gasoline
Every year he attempts to grow a mustache in November
And he leaves it there til the leaves are all but green
He's the same kinda fella
That ain't afraid of skinny jeans
His favorite color is burgundy
But he likes every shade of green
He's got a drawer full of sweaters
Pockets full of lint
His favorite cocktail is PBR and
His car is painted mint
There was a girl who wore thick rimmed glasses
She didn't even look, she just needed them for sight
If she lost them then you know that it'd be drastic
So she wore them all day and all night
One day she met a fella
Who wears a funky hat
Rides a bike with a bumper sticker and
Always shops from the vintage rack
He had a handful of records
and he was carrying them along
So they went off to a coffee shop
To talk about their favorite songs

Lions
04:25
|

When I was young I built myself a tree
The branches were lovely, and you shoulda seen them leaves
I spent many an afternoon just loungin' in her shade
I built her strong and sturdy to withstand the tests of age.
And when the wind came callin'
She stood fast to the ground
But it picked me up and dragged me off to another town.
And if you feel like your soul is cryin'
Well don't you show it or they'll feed you to the lions
Yeah I can't bear to see you hurt
But you're lyin' there cryin' in the dirt
Why won't you speak to me?
The other night I had myself a dream
And I might have said some things I didn't really mean
Is it too late to say I'm Sorry, or would you listen still?
How I long to hear your voice, I used to know it well.
And when the wind came callin'
You stood fast to the ground
But it tied me up and dragged me off to another town.
And if you feel like your soul is cryin'
Well don't you show it or they'll feed you to the lions
Yeah I can't bear to see you hurt
But you're lyin' there cryin' in the dirt
Why won't you speak to me?
Please just speak to me.
